Have you seen a new home lately? Well, I mean, have you looked at the windows from the outside at a distance? Did they appear coated or colored like some new office building? If so, there probably was Low-E glass in the windows.

Low-E glass is one of the technological marvels of today's residential construction. Who would have thought 25 years ago that glass could be coated with an ultra-thin layer of metal? Who would have guessed that this metal coating would allow you to see through the glass and provide actual insulating value? Not me, that's for sure!

The E is for Emissivity

My Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary defines emissivity as "the relative power of a surface to emit heat by radiation." Emit means to "throw or give off." Okay, so Low-E glass obviously is a special glass that has a low rate of emission. In other words, if there is a heat source inside your house (or outside!), the glass bounces the heat from that object back away from the glass. So, in the winter months, if you have Low-E glass in your home, much of the warmth (heat) given off by the furnace and all the objects which the furnace has heated, is bounced back into the room.

In the summer, the same thing happens but in reverse. The sun heats things up (the air, sidewalks, driveways, next door neighbors bricks, etc.) outside of your house. This heat radiates from those objects and tries to get into your house. Of course, it tries to take the path of least resistance, that being the glass. With Low-E glass much of this heat bounces off the glass and stays outside.

The Two Types of Low-E

There are two types of Low-E glass: hard coat and soft coat. As you might imagine, they have different properties. In fact, they actually look different.

Hard coat Low-E glass is manufactured by pouring a thin layer of molten tin onto a sheet of glass while the glass is still slightly molten. The tin actually becomes "welded" to the glass. This process makes it difficult or "hard" to scratch or remove the tin. Often this glass has a blueish tint to it.

Soft coat Low-E glass, on the other hand, involves the application of silver, zinc or tin to glass in a vacuum. The glass enters a vacuum chamber filled with an inert gas which is electrically charged. The electricity combined with the vacuum allows molecules of metal to sputter onto the glass. The coating is fairly delicate or "soft."

Furthermore, if silver is used (and it often is) this coating can oxidize if exposed to normal air. For this reason, soft coat Low-E glass must be used in an insulated glass assembly. Sealing the soft coating in between two pieces of glass protects the soft coating from outside air and sources of abrasion. Also, the space between the two pieces of glass is often filled with argon gas. The argon gas inhibits oxidation of the metallic coating. It also acts as an additional insulator.

The two types of Low-E glass have different performance characteristics. The soft coat process has the ability to reflect more heat back to the source. It typically has a higher R value. R values are a measure of resistance to heat loss. The higher the R value of a material, the better its insulating qualities. Look at Table 1 for a comparison of R values and the different types of glass.

Low-Emission Glass

Low emission glass (or low-e glass) is a type of window glass that is coated with a microscopic layer of metal oxide. This layer allows sunlight to enter but filters out the heat. Low-e glass is an insulating glass that reduces heat transfer through the glass and improves its energy efficiency. It allows homes to stay warmer in the winters and cooler in the summer by rejecting the hot rays of the sun. Low emission glass cuts down the cost of artificial lighting and air conditioning.

Impact Resistant Glass

Impact resistant glass is regular glass that is strengthened and reinforced by a laminating or glazing material. It is available in two main forms: shatter-resistant glass film coating and laminated glass. Shatter resistant film layers the surface of a window with a coating that keeps the window intact when it cracks or breaks. Laminated impact resistant glass is made of two layers of glass that have a bonded, shatterproof inner core made of a laminated material (typically PVB or polyvinyl butyral). Impact resistant glass is framed in a heavy-duty window frame. The glass resists shattering when hit by a forceful object (such as a golf ball or a branch of a tree). An impact resistant glass greatly reduces debris and water penetration, and prevents injury during hurricanes, tornadoes and explosions.

Reflective Glass

Reflective glass is a type of glass that is coated with a reflective material or coating (commonly metal oxide). Reflective glass is used to reduce heat loss and gain and allow homes to be climate controlled. Heat reflective glass is available in two types: soft-coat (or sputtered) glass, and hard-coat (pyrolytic) glass. Soft coat glass is susceptible to moisture and air damage and is commonly sealed within triple or double glazed windows. Hard coat glass is not sealed but is not as effective as soft coat glass in keeping the heat out. Reflective glass provides privacy during the day but allows full visibility from the outside during the night, especially if the lights are switched on.

With Low E, solar selective Low E, hard-coat, soft-coat, sputtered, and pyrolytic terminology to deal with, you need the facts on Low E.

CVD	CVD, or Chemical Vapor Deposition, is one of two main technologies used to manufacture Low Emissivity glass. In the CVD process, vapor directed to the hot glass surface reacts to form a ceramic coating. The resulting Low E product is often referred to as "hard coat".
Emissivity	Emissivity refers to the ability of a surface to absorb or reflect heat. An energy efficient glazing technology, Low Emissivity glass is a poor absorber of heat!
Hard Coat	Also known as "pyrolytic", hard coat refers to Low E glass manufactured via the CVD process. Because the coating is covalently bonded to the glass, hard coat Low E is extremely durable.
MSVD	MSVD, or Magnetron Sputterering Vacuum Deposition (also known as "sputtering"), is one of two main technologies used to manufacture Low Emissivity glass. In MSVD, a metal or ceramic target bombarded with ions releases atoms to form a thin coating on a sheet of glass. The resulting Low E product is often called "soft coat" or "sputtered".
Pyrolytic	See "Hard Coat" or "CVD"
Soft Coat	Also know as "sputtered", soft coat refers to Low E glass manufactured via the MSVD process. Less durable than its hard coat counterpart, soft coat Low E requires special storage and handling to prevent damage to the coating.
Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)	The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (or SHGC) refers to a window's ability to transmit solar radiation. The SHGC ranges from 0-1. A value of 0 indicates that the window functions like a wall, essentially preventing any solar energy from entering the building. A value of 1 indicates that the window functions like an opening, allowing all solar energy in. In cold climates, a high SHGC can lower heating costs by using passive solar heating. In warm climates, a low SHGC is desired to keep unwanted heat out and reduce cooling costs.
Solar Selective Low E	Specifically designed to enhance comfort in warm climates, solar selective Low E is a Low E glass with a low solar heat gain coefficient, like Arkema's Sun ETM.
Sputtered	See "Soft Coat" or "MSVD"
U-Value	Also known as the K-value, the U-value is a measure of a window's ability to transfer heat (usually given in W/m2K or Btu/hr ft2 oF). Windows with a low U-value, like Low Emissivity windows, are efficient insulators against heat loss.

This is a large customized granite base we made for one of our USA customer in Oakland, which is used for placing a bronze police statue, in order to memory of the police who faithfully serve to protect their community. Followings are some more specification about the base:

1) Material: Absolute black granite
2) Size: Upper side: 1373mm x 686mm
Bottom side: 1778mm x 889mm
Total height: 610mm
3) Shape: Hexagon.
4) Finish: Polish above 90 degree.

We made such a large base from absolute granite, with excellent color and finish surface. The base packed in special wooden crate with good foam protection, to make sure that it can be delivery safely and completely. After the customer received the base, they are grateful for such a perfect base, the whole project was finished well and exceed their expectation.

DIY Granite Cutting

Granite cutting is not a typical DIY project. It involves special tools and equipment along with a knowledge of stone structure. Granite is cut for countertops, tiling installations and various other projects like granite bar top installs or the creation of granite statue bases and bookends. If you are considering starting a DIY project that involves granite cutting, make sure you have the proper tools and basic stone-cutting knowledge.

Tools Required
An important aspect of any DIY project is the tools. In granite cutting they are especially important. An ordinary saw simply will not cut the granite. Use a high-powered masonry saw or stone cutter. A diamond bit blade or one that is designed to cut granite is also a necessity. In addition, the proper lubrication is required. Without this, your blade will not function properly. The friction involved with cutting granite produces an enormous amount of heat, enough to warp and break your blade and damage the saw.

Processes
First, set the granite on a stable cutting surface, once that supports the granite properly. The two granite pieces formed by the cut must each be supported so they will not fall. In addition, for interior cuts like sink holes, position the granite so the area closest to the cut is supported. Stress produced by a new cut into the slab will produce a crack if the stone is not properly supported. Always use caution when attempting a cut, and position yourself so you are not under the granite or in the path of the saw blade.

Types of Cuts
There are many types of granite products. Granite tiles are cut with a stone tile saw, while a countertop slab is cut with a larger wet saw or stone saw. The cutting of tile is much faster than the cutting of a countertop slab, and a more powerful saw with a larger diameter blade must be employed to cut the thicker slab. Otherwise the results will be inferior. Learn the basics of a wet saw before you attempt any type of granite cutting. Higher quality lubrication and bit materials will always give you a straighter and faster cut no matter which type of material you are shaping. Metal abrasives used in cutting blades are as varied as the types of granite you will encounter and too various to list here. Selecting the right ones for your cut is as important as the process of the cut itself.
